Siargao stopped being a secret around 2019, and the island has spent the years since learning to handle the attention. It’s still the best island in the Philippines for three specific things: surfing, island-hopping, and doing both on a shoestring budget without feeling like a resort. The vibe in General Luna — the island’s main town — is barefoot hostels, surfboard racks and honest prices.
The quick answer
- What it is: Surf island off Surigao del Norte, Mindanao
- Best season: August–November for waves; April–June for flat, easy beach days
- How long: 4–5 days (two surf days, one island hop, one free day)
- Getting there: Fly to Sayak (IAO) from Manila, Cebu or Clark, then 30–40 min van to General Luna
- Budget: ₱1,200–2,500/day per person
Cloud 9
Cloud 9 is one of the most famous surf breaks in the world — a fast, hollow reef break in front of a wooden tower that everyone photographs. It’s not for beginners on a big day. Beginners should go to the gentler waves at Jacking Horse or Pacifico, or take a lesson from the certified instructors on Cloud 9’s foam waves when it’s small. A 2-hour lesson with board costs around ₱800–1,000.
Island hopping
The standard Siargao island-hopping day hits three sandbars: Guyam (tiny palm island, 20 minutes), Daku (the big one — get the grilled tuna from the vendors, it’s the best meal on the island), and Naked Island (literally just a sandbar with no shade — bring a hat and sunscreen). The boats leave General Luna around 9am and return by 4pm.
Beyond the tour
- Sugba Lagoon: a turquoise lagoon in Del Carmen with a wooden deck, kayaks and cliff jumps — book this as its own trip
- Magpupungko Tidal Pools: natural rock pools you can swim in at low tide, 40 minutes north
- Pacifico: a chilled surfing village on the north coast, worth one night
- Sohoton Cove (Bucas Grande): the jellyfish lagoon — a long day trip but unforgettable
Where to stay
General Luna is the base. For surf, stay near Cloud 9 (north of the bridge); for food and nightlife, stay near the tourism road. Budget: dorm beds from ₱600; comfort: boutique hotels from ₱2,500.
Our advice
Rent a scooter (₱400/day) — the island’s best spots are spread out, and tricycles eat your budget. Book Cloud 9 surf sessions by checking the tide tables at the tower first. And do not leave without eating at the grilled-tuna vendors on Daku Island.
