Coron is what Palawan looks like when you take the scenery of El Nido and turn the volume up underwater. The town sits on Busuanga Island, and the reason people fly here is a single stretch of water that holds Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Barracuda Lake and more WWII shipwrecks than any other dive site in Southeast Asia.

Kayangan Lake

The view from the top of Kayangan Lake’s limestone platform is the one you’ve seen on every Philippine tourism poster — and unlike most poster views, it’s better in person. The lake itself is freshwater floating over saltwater, and the visibility is so good that the bottom looks like a glass floor. Go early: tour boats arrive from 9am, and by 10 the boardwalk is a queue.

The Super Ultimate tour

The standard Coron island tour is the Coron Super Ultimate — Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Barracuda Lake, Skeleton Wreck snorkel, Atwayan Beach lunch and a hot spring finish. It’s a long day — 8am to 5pm — and worth every minute; the desk quotes today’s rate at booking. Twin Lagoon’s narrow entrance swim feels like discovering a cave on purpose.

Wreck diving

Coron Bay holds a dozen Japanese supply ships sunk by US airstrikes in 1944. The shallower ones — including the Skeleton Wreck, which you can snorkel — are visible from the surface. Certified divers should book an intro-to-wreck dive with any of the town’s dive shops; the Okikawa Maru and Irako are the famous ones.

Coron + El Nido combo

The classic Palawan pairing is Coron → El Nido (or the reverse) by fast ferry, 4 hours. That’s our recommended 6-day Palawan loop:

Where to stay

Coron town is small and walkable; the best-value stays are a 10-minute tricycle ride from the pier. The island resorts (Club Paradise, Two Seasons) are beautiful but remote — stay in town for the tours, not the resort.

Our advice

If you dive, do the wreck dive before the island tour — the Super Ultimate is a full day and you won’t want to rush either. And the Mt. Tapyas sunset hike (700 steps) is free and worth the climb; bring water and go 45 minutes before sunset.
